assessment grades
Overall letter grades will be based on a combination of summative and formative assessments. All summatives should show that the student is proficient or better in the standards. If a student has not yet shown evidence of meeting or exceeding a learning target for a particular standard, he/she is expected to retake the assessment for that learning target. The student will have to make corrections on the original summative before retaking a version covering the same content. This will give me a chance to look over the work and find the areas in which the student is struggling.
Retakes can be taken during students' ATI class period, during their math class on designated Make-up/Retake days, or arranged ahead of time with me to take during lunch or before/after school.
All assessments will be graded on a continuum of achievement. You will see codes in the grade book that represent where on the continuum the student is performing on specific learning targets based on the Common Core Math Standards. The grades are Mastery, Advanced, Meets, Approaching, or Beginning.
Mastery (MAS) = The student consistently surpasses the advanced level and
demonstrates an in-depth understanding of the standard.
Advanced (ADV) = The student regularly meets the standard and demonstrates
a working knowledge of essential skills. While there are still some weaknesses,
the strengths are dominant.
Meets (MTS) = The student occasionally demonstrates a working knowledge of
the essential skills that encompass the standard. There are more strengths than weaknesses.
Approaching (APP) = The student occasionally demonstrates a working knowledge of
the essential skills that encompass the standard, however there are more weaknesses
than strengths.
Beginning (BEG) = Little or no understanding or skill demonstrated yet.
I understand that some of this might be confusing to you, so after you have checked out PAL, please ask your student to clarify and then feel free to contact me if you have further questions.
